You are the Gift

Earlier this year, Sharon Eubanks gave a devotional at BYU titled “You are the Gift” that has stuck with me ever since. The premise of the talk can be summed up in some of her parting words: “If we change our perspective so that caring for the poor and the needy is less about giving stuff away and more about filling the hunger for human contact, providing meaningful conversation, and creating rich and positive relationships, then the Lord can send us someplace.” This sentiment is powerful to me. Though the whole point of the talk was about how we don’t need to travel great distances or fundraise large amounts of money to make a difference, I found myself thinking about it a lot on my trip (where I had ironically enough, done both of those things). Gnat takes flight

Well, I'm finally on my way to Ghana! I was full of nerves yesterday morning on the way to the airport but that might have just been the rush I got from waiting until the last possible second to finish packing. Now that I've settled into my long flights, the nerves are gone and I'm pretty bored. I have a long flight schedule because I got a pretty good deal on tickets (always so worth it to me), so I have layovers in both D.C. and Brussels before getting to Accra. In preparation for this trip, I've had to read various articles, complete online training modules, and answer very thorough questions about what exactly I've learned. Though a bit tedious, it's part of the reason I chose to work with this program. I wanted to be a part of an organization that understands sustainable development and makes sure I understand it too. A Day in the Life of a Global Health Intern in Ghana

I thought I'd do a little post on what a typical day is like here in case you don't wanna read all six weeks of journaling to get the same idea. 7:00: Wake up and get ready for the day. Don't forget lots of deodorant. And no need to worry about makeup because that stuff will melt off after 10 minutes outside. 7:30 - 8:00: Eat the breakfast the telecentre provides. It's usually toast with something, so toast and eggs, toast and cornflakes, toast and coco, etc. If you're lucky, they also have milo which is basically just hot chocolate and sooo good. 8:30 - 10:00: The Crystal Eye Clinic staff arrives to pick you up. You and five other volunteers pile into the car and begin the drive to the outreach. The drive is usually somewhere between one and two hours and you spend the time listening to podcasts, sleeping, or just talking with the other people in the car.
