Week 4: Tamale

Sunday, May 26th: The closest LDS branch was hours away, so no church today for Christian and I. I held a mini devotional for myself in my hotel room and read a General Conference talk. It was really good and I think I’ll do a separate blog post about my thoughts on it. No options for breakfast today, they simply placed a heaping pile of jollof rice and fish salad in front of me and that was that. Dr. Wanye explained that there wasn’t really a difference in “breakfast food” and “dinner food” and I felt like this meal exemplified that nicely. Before we got started with the surgeries today, Dr. Wanye met with each of the patients from yesterday for their post-op check-up. There were a few minor complications and one guy we had to send back for a bit of corrective surgery, but for the most part the results were greatl! Things I Will (& Won't) Miss About Ghana

It's hard to believe that I've only been here for six weeks because so much life has happened in that short amount of time. With my time here up, I've been reflecting a lot about what I've been missing about home and what I'll miss about here. Things I will miss: - The food. Namely the mangoes, the pineapple, milo, boflot, and chocolate FanIce. I will most definitely be suffering withdrawals when I get back home. - How cheap everything is. I'm gonna have a hard time paying more than $1.50 for a full plate of food or $4 for a new shirt. - The humidity. Maybe not the humidity itself, but rather its effects. Okay fine maybe just how curly it makes my hair. - I didn't see this one coming either, but I weirdly like handwashing my clothes. I don't have to worry about clothes getting ruined in the washer or dryer and I can get it done while I'm showering. #multitasking - The constant learning. And so it begins

Saturday, May 4th After 24+ hours of traveling, I landed in Ghana! Getting past immigration didn’t take too long and miraculously none of my baggage was lost in transit. I hurried outside to meet the driver that would take me to the hotel, and I was hit with a WAVE of humidity. Holy Hannah. Ghana’s heat is everything people said it would be and more. We stuffed my suitcases in the car along with the eight other volunteers’ stuff and headed to the hotel. Sitting in the van, I finally had time to stop and take in my surroundings. I was speechless. There were so many people and little shacks and businesses. And it was so much greener than I was expecting! The rest of the van was talking and joking around but I literally just sat there and stared out the window in awe of how different everything was. We finally arrived at the hotel, unpacked a few things, received our new phones, changed into clothes that weren’t so sweaty, and went exploring. Me and four others crammed into a car ...
